Welcome to the Second Grade

2009- 2010

I hope your summer was an enjoyable one. Below are just a few hints to assure your child a smooth transition into their new class.

Children should not be brought to school before 8:00. Please try to avoid lateness, as it is a distraction to the whole class. Children are expected to be on line in the schoolyard when the first bell rings.  Dismissal is at 2:25 pm from the 21st Avenue gate. If you are not personally picking up your child after school, and you are allowing someone else to do so, please write me a note in the morning.

Children should be sent to school prepared.  They should have several sharpened pencils with clean erasers, in their pencil cases, everyday.  Please stick to the basics when purchasing supplies. Refrain from buying any supply that will distract your child or that could be used as a toy.

L
unches should come to school in a brown paper bag.  Lunch monies (pizza, bagel, etc…) should come to school in separate envelopes, properly labeled,(name/food item). Lunch money will be collected on Monday morning only.

Please put your child’s name on all of their belongings.  This includes books, schoolbags, sweaters, lunches etc.  When the children remove their sweatpants in gym class it is extremely stressful for them if they cannot locate their pants at the end of class. Their names must be applied with a permanent marker.

All books should be covered by next week.  Cover workbooks with clear contact paper. Cover textbooks with a textbook cover or a brown paper bag.  Check the covers periodically, and replace them when they begin to wear.  Do not cover textbooks with contact paper .

This year we will be selling SFA Assignment Pads here at school.  These pads will make copying HW from the board an easier task for the children.  I will be checking and initialing the assignment pads for the first few weeks. Please sign all homework every night.  All tests should be signed and returned to school the following day.

The children have a “take-home” folder.  This is for all our correspondence.  Please check and clean out this folder daily.  If you send in anything- notes, money, etc. please place it in this folder.

Call the office if your child is absent.  An absent note must accompany your child on the day he or she returns to school.

Simple birthday celebrations are most welcome.  Please just drop me a note a few days in advance and let me know what day your child plans to celebrate.  “Goodies” should be dropped off at the office first thing in the morning.

Please comply with the policy of the school and refrain from sending in birthday invitations to be distributed.

For class Holiday parties please follow the directions of your class reps. They will be in charge of setting these events up. I request that these parties also stay simple.

Read the Student-Parent Handbook, sign and return the contract at the end of the book.  Emergency cards should be completed and returned to me as soon as possible.  Please write in your child’s height and weight on the Emergency card on lines provided.

Practice tying shoes, along with zipping and buttoning jackets.

This year your child will be receiving two important sacraments.  We will be spending a great amount of time preparing for these life-forming events. Children will be expected to attend 10 Pre-Communion Masses throughout the year. The children have a special role in these Pre-Communion Liturgies.  As parents, you are the primary teachers of our Catholic faith.  Let your family life model the principals of that faith.  Please make every effort to attend Saturday evening or Sunday Mass with your child. Give to your child a gift that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives- their faith.

I have one final, yet crucial request.  I cannot stress the importance of shared reading, and creative writing time with your child.  Take 15-20 minutes a day to listen to your child read or just sit and read them a story. After they have read a story encourage them to write a sentence or two about it.   In addition, make flash cards and practice high frequency sight words with them.  If you need a list I will supply it for you. Encourage and praise their reading and writing ability, whatever level they are at. Help them to discover the joys of literacy.   The Public Library is a wonderful place for children to explore new worlds and discover themselves. I promise you it will pay off in the future if we instill in our children a love for and a confidence in reading and writing today.

I am looking forward to an exciting year, if I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. Attached please find a list of supplies
 needed in the second grade.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Annunziata
