Welcome to 6th grade! Your child is now officially in middle school. In homeroom, students will be taught Math, Social Studies, and Religion.  This year the students will switch classes for English Language Arts (ELA) and for Science. This is a very important year because the students take New York State Exams in ELA and Math. This is also the year that high schools request to see report cards, in terms of grades, behavior issues, lateness, etc.

This year, we will continue to follow the Common Core State Standards. The following explains the Common Core changes in the 6th grade curriculum for Math and ELA.

In Math, the following are critical areas which are designed to bring focus to the standards in the sixth grade:

  • Connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems
  • Completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notionof number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers
  • Writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations
  • Developing understanding of statistical thinking
  • Reasoning about relationships among shapes to determine area, surface area, and volume

In ELA, the following are Common Core College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading:

  • Key Ideas and Details: Students read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Students determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.
  • Craft and Structure: Students should interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole. Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.
  • Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Students will integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence. Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.
  • Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity: Students read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
  • Responding to Literature: Students will respond to literature by employing knowledge of literary language, textual features, and forms to read and comprehend, reflect upon, and interpret literary texts from a variety of genres and a wide spectrum of American and world cultures.

In the area of Social Studies, students will learn about the Ancient World. They will focus on ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Asia and Africa. Students will learn about the early forms of government, trade, community and overall living of these ancient people. They will work together to create projects, put on skits and use websites to further their study.

In the area of Religion, students will explore and learn about the Old Testament. They will learn about early prophets, such as Abraham and Moses. In addition, they will learn about other patriarchs and matriarchs. They will use Bibles, the religion textbook and watch religion video clips to learn more about our faith.
