January 29, 2012 - The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus-preaching1

My Dear Parishioners,

The Gospel for today is a good example of brevity. Christ has called some apostles and begins to teach in the synagogue. The most frequent title for Christ in the New Testament is teacher/master/rabbi. No title for Christ is used more often. Mark says quite simply: “On the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught.” Synagogue worship of that time included a commentary on the Scripture. Mark does not give the Scripture text which Jesus chose, but we can only imagine how profound the teaching of the Son of God expounding on the Word of the Father would have been.

January 22, 2012 - The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

repent11

My Dear Parishioners,

As baptized Christians we are called to please the Lord in everything we think, say, and do. If we do this, we are assured of joy in this life and in the next. Too often, we forget this. We think we’ll be happy by   following our own desires and seeking our own pleasures. Experience should tell us that this just doesn’t work. So let’s suppose we are coming to the end. It’s the time of fulfillment as we have heard in our readings today. How would we have wanted to live our lives? Let’s go a step further: Why don’t we live for the Lord because of FAITH and not FEAR?  Realization of the end might be the catalyst for  conversion, but it should not be the cause. Let us change our attitude because it is right, and not because of fright.

January 15, 2012 - The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

luke-9-232

My Dear Parishioners,

We are back in what the Church calls Ordinary Time in the Liturgical Life of the Church. Jesus in today’s gospel asks the question: “What are you looking for?” I would suspect that what we are looking for is meaning and fulfillment in life, purpose, and direction in life.

January 8, 2012 - The Epiphany of the Lord

threeKings

My Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. The magi, wisemen or, as they have been variously called, astrologers who regularly searched the heavens for signs, were attracted to the star that led them eventually to Jesus, the new born King. The Gospel for Epiphany, the manifestation of the Lord, tells us that the magi “saw his star at its rising” and they came to “do him homage.”

January 1, 2012 - The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

mary

My Dear Parishioners,

Happy New Year! What better way to begin a new year than to be celebrating here, together in Church, with our parish family, giving praise and thanksgiving to our Lord Jesus Christ. As with any New Year, we give some thought as to how things are going in life, what can be improved, and what changes we would like to make for this New Year.

The shepherds traveled to Bethlehem to see if the word of God was to come to pass. Upon seeing the child in the manger, they understood what they had been told concerning the child. The shepherds went off and reported what they saw and heard. They later returned to Mary, Joseph, and the Infant Jesus praising and glorifying God. They had been forever changed.
