A mouse in
the house? Oh no! Ah, but just recently this became one of the most desirable
of items. In this lesson you will discover the difficulties encountered in the days
of rodent-free computing, the origins of the mouse, and the ease of its use; maintenance
of the mouse is also a part of this journey. You will find a fun site to practice your
mouse skills and also have the opportunity to design your very own mouse.
| 1. | Computing before the mouse |
| 2. | A strange new invention |
| 3. | History - why is the mouse called a mouse? |
| 4. | The parts of the mouse - how does it work? |
| 5. | Manipulation - practice your mouse skills |
| 6. | Maintenance - how do we make sure that it continues to work? |
| 7. | Improvements (changes) - when is a mouse not a mouse? |
| 8. | Design a mouse that you would like to use |
Working with your partner, answer these questions in complete sentences and be sure to write your source for the answer:
| 1. | Before the invention of the mouse, how did people move about from place to place on the computer? |
| 2. | Who is the inventor of the mouse? |
| 3. | Did this person have any other important inventions? |
| 4. | Why is it called a mouse? Find at least one reason from a website, then list four more reasons why you think it is called by this name. |
| 5. | Name 4 of the parts of the mouse. |
| 6. | Find a site in the resource list that lets you use your mouse skills in a fun way. What is its URL address? Take a few minutes break to practice! |
| 7. | What are some of the things that can be done to keep the mouse working smoothly? |
| 8. | People have tried to improve upon the mouse - tell about 2 of these methods. |
| * 9. | Discuss some possible new designs. In Paint or in Kid Pix, type your school heading, draw and label your design, then save it to your disk. |
| *10. | Write 2 or 3 sentences about the design on your loose leaf paper. Together, you will give an oral presentation about your findings and design. |

Together, read the questions and discuss where the best answer might be found. Research and answer each of the questions on loose leaf paper. Discuss and design your personal version of a mouse. Present your results orally to the class.
* As a home assignment SFA students will each be expected to complete a project.
